Feeding our feathered friends

Feeding our feathered friends

The Bay team have been making lots of bird feeders since the new year to help the birds through the winter!

The Nature and Wellbeing Officers - Mike, Alex and Jess, led the activities at the start of the month with their groups. Mike's Wyre group managed to get us 10% toward our goal of 600 bird feeders with his group in Towers Wood, Cleveleys.

Our Community Engagement Officer for Morecambe, Deborah has also been giving out bird feeder packs around the area, with instructions about how to build your own, so people can carry on the activity at home and gain the knowledge of how to put a feeder together for next year. Deborah has also been busy creating a bird nature trail through Happy Mount Park. 'Tree cookies' - slices of logs - with different birds painted on them will be hung around the park for people to follow and look at while they're also looking for the real thing.

Although it may not seem like much, doing something creative which benefits others is also an amazing way to work on your wellbeing - especially when the wildlife you're helping can be seen out of your kitchen window.

It can be very difficult for our garden birds at this time of year, which is why its nice to give them a hand, even if it's just a handful of birdseed scattered on your lawn. During the summer months however, it's best to leave them at it, getting some of the more protein based foodstuff like insects that they'll need to get through the next Autumn and Winter.

We'll be taking part in the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch from the 28th- 30th January, documenting what we can see. You can still join in even if you don't have a garden - just head down to your local park, or even the beach and see what's out there!
